Mumbai Drenched as Heavy Rains Lash City

4-Month-Old Baby Washed Away

Mumbai experienced a torrential downpour on Sunday, leading to severe waterlogging and disruptions across the city. According to officials, nearly 152mm of rainfall was recorded in a 12-hour period, accompanied by a high tide of 444m at noon.

In a tragic incident, a 4-month-old baby was washed away in a water stream as her parents were attempting to cross a flooded street. Rescue teams were immediately deployed, but efforts to locate the child are ongoing.

Despite the heavy rainfall, local train services continued to operate, albeit with delays. However, several roads and low-lying areas were inundated, causing traffic snarls and inconvenience to commuters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts for Saturday, July 13. The alert indicates a likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

The incessant rains have exposed the city's inadequate drainage infrastructure, raising concerns about the preparedness for future extreme weather events. Authorities have been working around the clock to clear waterlogged areas and restore normalcy as soon as possible.
